It felt strange sitting at the table in Tate’s Diner with Grayson to her side and Joseph directly in front of her. Ivey had left her a message saying she had to catch a last-minute flight to Milan to talk her designer off the ledge. Anna-May was adamant that she was going to stay camped out at her house until George left. Abandoned by everyone else in her life, Millie was stuck eating dinner with these two men.

The tension that surrounded the table was palpable. What did these two men have to be stressed about? When she peeked over at Joseph, she noticed that he was staring a little too hard at his menu.

Before she could say anything, Grayson lifted his arm and rested it on her shoulders. "I've missed this," he said with his lips inches from her ear. She could feel his warm breath on her cheek. It made her stomach twist, so she scooted away from him.

Joseph cleared his throat. "So I hear you're a ball player?"

From the corner of her eye, Millie saw Grayson turn his attention over to Joseph and lean back, tapping his fingers on the table. "I'm actually one of the starting pitchers for the Atlanta Braves. Maybe you've heard of me? Grayson—The Bullet—Shaw?”

Joseph widened his eyes. "Nope. Never heard of you."

Grayson’s laugh came out strained. "Where did you pick up this guy? Has he been living under a rock?"

Millie stared at Grayson. Why would he say that? "Joseph's been helping out around the hospital. He's actually getting some of the patients to interact with him." Heat permeated her cheeks as she met Joseph’s gaze. "It's been really nice having him around."

When she glanced over at Grayson, she saw that his jaw muscles were twitching as he stared at her. “I’ve helped out of the hospital,” he said with a scoff.

Before Millie could answer him, the chimes of a phone sounded from across the table. When she glanced over, she saw Joseph pull his phone from his pocket and study it. His forehead furrowed as his finger scrolled the screen. He glanced around, covered the phone with his hand, and slid out from the booth. "If you'll excuse me, I need to take care of something,” he said as he turned and made his way out the front door.

Millie watched him walk away.

“Seriously, where did you find this guy?” Grayson asked in a mocking tone once Joseph was out of ear shot.

Millie turned and shot him an exasperated look. "What's wrong with you? You’re being rude.”

“I’m not rude. How am I being rude? That guy clearly is interested in more than just the kids at the hospital. It’s not rude to call him on that.” He gave her a pointed look.

Millie stared at him. How was she supposed to respond to that? Was he seriously suggesting that Joseph was interested in her? Heat raced to her cheeks. This was not a topic she wanted to discuss with Grayson. It felt prudent to change the subject.
